LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION: Gina Bellman Previews Sophie’s Evolution in the IMDb TV Revival

More than eight years after LEVERAGE ended its run on TNT, the delightful series—about a group of reformed con people who use their combined skills to fight the powerful (and help those in need)—is back with a new tale, LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION.

In the IMDb TV series (which streams for free with limited ads), “the Leverage crew have watched as the rich and powerful continue to take what they want without consequence. Grifter Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman), thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf), hitter Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane), and hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge) have watched the world change over the last eight years. Since their last job, it’s become easier – and sometimes legal – for the rich to become richer and the powerful to squash anyone who gets in their way. To address the changes in the world around them, the team finds new blood in Harry Wilson (Noah Wyle), a corporate lawyer who is looking for redemption after realizing he’d been sitting on the wrong side of the table for his entire career, and Breanna Casey (Aleyse Shannon), Hardison’s foster sister who has a knack for computers, robotics, and getting into trouble.”

But when the show ended, the team had split up—in a good way: Sophie and Nate (Timothy Hutton) got their happily ever after, while Parker, Eliot, and Hardison were in charge of the worldwide Leverage International. Now, the Leverage International team has come to Sophie, wanting her help…but she’s reluctant to jump back in.

“I don’t think it’s going to be much of a spoiler to say that some time has passed, and that she has matured,” Bellman explains in the video below. “I felt very blessed, actually, that they gave her such a strong opening, because I really get the impression that she’s had a very fulfilling personal relationship, and that she’s been stable…and that she’s really experienced commitment for the first time in her life.”

“I definitely feel that she’s not such a flibbertigibbet,” she continues. “In the past, I always felt that she had her bags packed [and] she was ready to go. You could turn around and Sophie’d be gone, she’d be exiting, stage left. I definitely feel that in LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION, she arrives and she’s looking for stability.”

And though she clearly has fondness for her former colleagues, “there’s some resistance about being a part of the team again,” Bellman admits. “But I love that they developed her and moved her forward. I definitely felt that she’s in a different place [than where we last saw her]. And for me, her journey is is really significant as she finds her spot where she lands.”
