THE NANNY’s Fran Drescher on Expanding the Show’s World for the Upcoming Broadway Show
June 28, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
With THE NANNY getting a second-life thanks to it finally being available to stream via HBO Max, the Fran Drescher-led comedy has a delightful next step for its future: Broadway.
News of the musical adaptation came in early 2020, with Drescher and co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson writing the book and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND’s Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger set to craft the songs. But when the pandemic hit, the show was put on hold.
But now, the show is moving forward—albeit slowly. (Schlesinger tragically passed away last year, due to complications from COVID.)
“This is a wonderful next step for THE NANNY, because to me the show was always kind of like a musical without the music,” Drescher said on the Monday, June 28 episode of THE TALK. “And also, Mr. Sheffield was a Broadway producer. So it seems like a real natural [fit] that it should actually go to Broadway. And through this whole pandemic, sadly Broadway was shut down. But we’ve been writing, and we’ve been writing also with Rachel Bloom who is the lyricist on it and she’s amazing.”
“Peter and I were so nervous that we wouldn’t find somebody who would get the tone of the show,” she continued. “But she also grew up watching it with her mom. She adds a little bit of a contemporary edge to it, but the humor and the tone is exactly spot on.”
As for the world of THE NANNY, “we’ve just busted it open for the Broadway stage,” she teased. “In the series we only had Niles working for Mr. Sheffield, but he was like such a rich man living in a mansion he would probably have staff. And now he does have a staff and they’ll be big musical numbers with the staff. So it’s really a lot of fun.”
“We go to Queens, we’re in Manhattan, we go to the Broadway stage which Mr. Sheffield is mounting a show on, the show within the show, which we really didn’t do that much in the series,” she continued. “Everybody seems really excited about it, and I think we’re just progressing beautifully. God willing, I’m guessing that probably in about the next two years, it will go to Broadway.”
