CHICAGO MED Bosses Tease New Faces, ‘Beloved’ Characters Returning in Season 7
September 17, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
When CHICAGO MED returns for its seventh season, the ED will look very different: In addition to April (Yaya DaCosta) and Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) leaving (under very different circumstances), there will be new doctors joining the hospital—and a new boss in Archer (Steven Weber).
So what comes next? Executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider shared a few teases via email…
Last season left things fairly open for April and Ethan. Even though April is no longer on-screen, what can you share about that relationship’s status and how it might play into the upcoming season?
Diane Frolov: Although Ethan still has feelings for April, he understands how important it is for her to follow her dream of becoming a nurse practitioner. Likewise, she loves him but needs to feel more fulfilled as a caregiver.
How are Natalie’s friends and former colleagues dealing with the fallout from her confession about stealing medicine to help her mother?
Andrew Schneider: Natalie’s confession particularly affects Crockett and Will, both of whom loved her. They miss her, but are determined to move forward with their lives. Their shared loss will bring these former rivals closer together.
What can you tease about Will’s journey back to the hospital after being fired last year, and how that experience shapes his ongoing relationship with his colleagues?
Frolov: Goodwin allows Will to come back but under one very difficult condition. His return will forge a new bond between them. Maggie, of course, is delighted to have her dear friend back.
How will Ethan be handling his recovery? And with Archer stepping in for him at work, how much is Ethan concerned about his job being there when he gets back?
Schneider: At the end of last season, Ethan assured Goodwin that he’d be back, and he’s determined to overcome both the physical and emotional trauma of being shot. The issue of his becoming chief again is less important to him at this point than regaining the speed and dexterity that an emergency room doctor needs.
How are the doctors handling Archer’s increased power in the ED?
Frolov: Not always well. Archer can be a difficult guy and a demanding boss. However, despite that, he’s still a first-rate trauma surgeon.
What can you tease about the characters Guy Lockard, Kristen Hager, and Michael Rady are playing? What unexpected new dynamics should fans be expecting with their addition to the MED world?
Schneider: Guy’s Dr. Scott was a police officer before he was a doctor, and he still has deep connections with law enforcement, including with cops on CPD. Kristen’s Dr. Hammer overcame a very difficult childhood (which she doesn’t talk about) to become the doctor she is today. She and Will went to medical school together, and she was first in their class. He wasn’t! Michael’s charming Dr. Cooper is an excellent critical care doctor, but Goodwin suspects he may be involved in illegal activity.
What can you tease about cases/patients that are coming up this season?
Frolov: We have a startling medical/psychiatric case involving identical twins; we explore the ethical/medical issues involved in organ transplant surgery; and we see the sad effects of incorrect diagnoses.
Anything else you want to tease about the upcoming season?
Schneider: Along with intriguing medical mysteries, there will be some surprise appearances by beloved characters.

So I will not be getting Ethan and April having an off screen relationship even though she’s furthering she studies to become a nurse practitioner. Also no Chexton endgame. After I have invested so much time and energy into this couple, I am getting nothing. Thanks alot Med. Thanks alot
