When CHICAGO P.D.’s ninth season kicks off, Voight (Jason Beghe) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) are going to be dealing with the fallout of their unexpected coverup—with varying degrees of success.

In the season 8 finale, Voight went to desperate lengths to find out information about Burgess’ (Marina Squerciati) kidnapping, and reverted to his former physical method of interrogation. Upton found her boss and talked him down…but when the man turned on them, Upton was forced to shoot to save Voight’s life.

Though Voight reassured Upton she did the right thing, he also told her not to call it in—he’d take care of it. The result? He disposed of the body.

In the aftermath,”for Upton, you’re going to see she has a lot of guilt,” Spiridakos explains in the video below. “You’re going to see what [toll] that takes ton her…She struggles for sure.”

Voight, meanwhile, is very aware that Upton is on a tightrope.

“He realizes that somebody that he is responsible for and also cares about is in distress,” Beghe admits. “And that this distress, you know, could—if it gets out of hand, and is not kept under control—create a lot of bad effects for the entire unit, as well as for she and him. So there’s a lot at stake there.”

After the encounter, Upton went to see Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and proposed.

And despite the less-than-ideal circumstance, “I think she meant it,” Spiridakos notes. “I think she realized in that moment what she has, and there was a fear of losing him that came out of [the situation]…We get to see right when we come back what his response to that is.”

There is also the biggest wild card of all: What will happen with Burgess, who is still fighting for her life after the kidnapping.

“Burgess is in a coma,” Beghe says. “And that’s the most important thing. It’s so much to deal with, that at all you can do is deal with it—and we do. Some things work out better than others.”
