About Last Night…THE VOICE, THE BIG LEAP, and ORDINARY JOE

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

THE VOICE: Hi, I’m obsessed with Girl Named Tom?! I love when groups compete on the show, and they feel like they could go far. And paired up with Team Kelly should be a good fit. I was a little underwhelmed with some of the other artists, but GNT has my attention so far.

I figured Ariana Grande would be fun on the show, but I really expected her to spark with John Legend or Kelly Clarkson. I am shocked and delighted by how weirdly delightful her banter with Blake Shelton is. I’m looking forward to see how the whole panel’s dynamic grows throughout the season. (Also, I would like a “thank u, next” button, please and thank you.)

THE BIG LEAP: I think the show has a lot of promise? I think Scott Foley is very, very good, as is Simone Recasner, but it felt like a lot of the reality show contestants’ storylines felt underdeveloped so far. But it’s also very much a pilot with a lot of characters in the mix, and I finished the hour wanting to see more, which is at least a good first step.

ORDINARY JOE: God, I hope this show succeeds. I’m an absolute sucker for what if/alternate reality storylines and this is ambitious as hell. (And brings up the question of fate vs. free will, another thing I love digging into.) The show completely needs someone as charming as James Wolk (who should be a major star at this point, but that’s a whole other issue) to ground it, and he does a wonderful job. It feels like there will be a delicate line to toe as the three timelines get further developed, but, man, I hope they can pull it off.
