FBI: INTERNATIONAL Boss Derek Haas on the ‘Non-Stop Thrill Ride’ Addition to the FBI Franchise
September 21, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
The FBI world expands with the Tuesday, September 21 premiere of FBI: INTERNATIONAL.
But launching as the third hour in a three-part crossover had its challenges. “It felt like trying to walk a tightrope between two moving 747s,” FBI: INTERNATIONAL boss Derek Haas said via email. “Making that episode was a crazy amount of work, but I’m really happy with the way it turned out.”
The new drama follows the FBI’s International Fly Team, which travels across the world looking to stop threats against the United States. Leading up the team is Agent Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank), with Agent Jamie Kellett (Heida Reed) as his second-in-command. Agent Andre Raines (Carter Redwood) and Agent Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) round out the team, while they also have Europol Agent Katrin Jaeger (Christiane Paul) onboard as the conduit between the team and each country they go to. And, of course, there’s Tank, the team’s dog/secret weapon.
“I love Forrester’s passion for the job,” Haas shared. “This isn’t a dark, haunted guy…he’s a guy who wakes up every day excited to catch bad guys. He’s a warrior for the downtrodden. Kellett is a cool customer, who brings a quick wit into every case. She also has a great touch with informants, and can get information from even the littlest fish.”
“Raines is equal parts brains and brawn…ready to crack a code or crack a skull as need be,” he continued. “Vo is the newbie, driven, and determined to make her mark on the FBI. [And] Tank likes biscuits and kicking ass.”
With each episode taking the team to a new location, “expect scenery and action like you don’t usually get on American TV,” Haas previewed. “We’re like an espionage movie wrapped in a crime show stuffed in a character drama.”
“They will be country-hopping, dropping in wherever and whenever Americans are in trouble,” he continued. “They’ll take on gun running, sex trafficking, theft, murder, assassination, kidnapping… it’s a non-stop thrill ride.”
And, potentially, more crossovers within the FBI universe. “I love the crossovers,” Haas, who also runs NBC’s CHICAGO FIRE, said. “I do the most of them! You never know when you’re going to see favorites from the other shows pop up on our hour.”
