NEW AMSTERDAM’s Tyler Labine on Iggy Stepping Back From Patient Care: ‘Things Are Good—Until They’re Just Not’
September 21, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
After going through a traumatizing experience with a patient last season (who broke into his home and essentially held him hostage), NEW AMSTERDAM’s Iggy (Tyler Labine) decided to step back from counseling patients.
When season 4 kicks off, “Iggy is sticking to his guns,” Labine previews in the video below. “He decided not to see patients and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Dammit, he means to [stand by that]. And he’s being supported by his loving husband, his children…this is a big change for his family. But so far so good, the support system is holding him up, and I think things are good—until they’re just not. He sort of comes up against some very predictable feelings and roadblocks.”
The first of which is an encounter with Mary Wheeler (Isabel Keating), someone he’s tasked with talking to, in the hopes of helping the hospital.
“So right on the heels of deciding not to see patients, Iggy has to see a patient,” he teases with a laugh. “Not in the typical sense: it’s more of he’s being outsourced by the hospital to exploit his relationship with this patient who has experience, specifically, with what has happened within the hospital.”
“He almost goes into detective mode, he has to go and pick this patient’s brains to help understand…what has happened in the hospital,” he continues. “And, unfortunately, that patient has a fairly intimate understanding of Iggy, as well, and she sucks him back into a very vulnerable place. [She] really picks at the scabs which are barely even beginning to form about him giving up on caring for people.”
