GHOSTS’ Richie Moriarty on Meeting a Mini-Pete on Halloween, Plus Pete’s Upcoming Family ‘Reunion’

GHOSTS star Richie Moriarty is having quite the month.

The new CBS comedy—about a couple who move into a home, unaware it’s inhabited by a gaggle of ghosts…until the wife, Sam (Rose McIver), sustains an injury that allows her to see them—quickly got off to a hot start, earning a full season order just two weeks after the show debuted.

And if that wasn’t enough, the actor, who plays Pete on the series, had one heck of a surprise on Halloween, when he opened the door to find a trick or treater dressed as his character.

“Evidently, what happened was this little girl decided she wanted to dress as Pete for Halloween, [and] was making her way through my neighborhood, having no idea that I lived [here],” Moriarty shares. “She ended up ringing a doorbell a couple doors down from my house, and one of our neighbors, who knows us, answered the door and said something to the effect of like, ‘Oh, you’re dressed as Richie for Halloween. That’s so cute.’ And she was like, ‘No, I’m dressed as Pete from GHOSTS.’ And my neighbor was like, ‘Well, he lives two doors down.’”

Moriarty’s neighbor brought the young girl, Rowan, and her mother over, though the duo were “super confused and didn’t know exactly what was happening.” For Moriarty, he was also confused when the doorbell rang—he had left candy outside, so he could have dinner with his family, and wasn’t expecting any visitors.

“At first I thought someone had put her up to it,” he admits with a laugh. “’Is this the kid of somebody I know? What’s going on?’ But she was clearly shellshocked seeing me and I was definitely shocked seeing her. And her mom was a few steps behind her on our front walkway, just beaming. It was just so sweet.”

Moriarty spent time talking with Rowan and told her to expect a Pete-centric episode this week, “and she started jumping up and down, she was so excited,” he recalls. “But it was just such an insane, funny coincidence. I mean, never did I expect to see someone dressed as Pete, especially this early. The show just came out in October—it feels exceptionally rare that someone would latch on to the show so quickly and want to dress as this character for Halloween. But it was just so sweet. What a special moment for both of us. It was just really nice.”

On-screen, Moriarty has the big episode this week, as Pete realizes he can utilize Sam to get an update on his family.

“Pete is in this unique position where he is the only ghost with a spouse and child that are still living,” he previews. “So he has, obviously, this desire to know more about what’s going on in their lives. When the idea is presented to him that he could possibly see these people again, like we could use Sam to invite them to the house, I think he’s really thrilled by that, for obvious reasons. I mean, he hasn’t seen his family in 40 years. And the idea that they could potentially be brought to him is incredible.”

But how does that quasi-reunion go? “He has an amazing moment with his family,” Moriarty teases. “Multiple amazing moments.”
