About Last Night…LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, GHOSTS, LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, and More

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!
THE QUEEN FAMILY SINGALONG: A lot of the performances were great, but I honestly remain baffled by the packaging of it. It almost felt like they were trying to do Queens-meets-Disneyland vibes? (Or at least trying to make The Hollywood Roosevelt have Tower of Terror vibes. Darren Criss is a good host who deserved better material.) And it was a bummer they had the Muppets, as delightful as they are, in this limited time. Alas.
LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: I’m not sure what it says about me that this was one of my favorite episodes in recent years. (Don’t answer that.)
Outside of it being a good episode, what also impressed me was the balance. We got the Buffy joke from Velasco (who officially made the opening credits) in the moments for a moment of levity before they discovered that horrific crime scene. And, truly, that was one of the most effed up crime scenes in the show’s history?! But we also got subtle moments of humanity and heart, like Olivia turning off the monitor at the end and choosing focusing on who the women were versus their grisly end.
Mariska Hargitay was also incredible in the episode, both as a mentor/boss—the gentleness Olivia displayed to Velasco, who is still getting used to the unit, juxtaposed with the quiet understanding she showed to McGrath, a man who has tried to diminish her life’s work/disrespected survivors and probably didn’t deserve the space she allowed him to freak out about what he witnessed at the crime scene—and as an investigator. That interrogation? Olivia—and Hargitay—played that perfectly. Just a great episode.
GHOSTS: Little Pete!! My whole freaking heart, man. I felt awful for (Big) Pete learning that his wife cheated on him—with, um, his best friend—but I’m so glad he was able to get closure. And see his daughter, plus meet his grandson.
But, also, the ghosts binge-watching TV is incredible?? Man, now with Sam at their disposal to catch them up on decades worth of gems, they can easily have the next couple of decades set, if they want.
LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME: Agnes, WHAT DID YOU DO??? I’m so fascinated by her decision to warn the family about the cops being on to them, because it effectively threw Reggie under the bus. It’s not like this was Elliot at risk; she wouldn’t care about him. Reggie’s life was, truly, in danger. And now…all hell has broken loose.
Speaking of mess, oh boy, Reggie’s reaction to learning “Eddie” was a cop—look, it was slightly more restrained than I expected (probably helps he was handcuffed to the table, to be fair), but, ugh, that devastation ran deep. Between being betrayed by his mama, his family, and now Eddie, Reggie is never going to trust anyone again.
I’m glad Bell is, officially, getting to keep control of the OC task force, but, man, Brewster getting promoted to be her boss makes no sense. (Though the shot of Guillermo Diaz‘ silent reaction cracked me up.) I’m so curious how much we see them interacting after this pod is over and what kind of drama could be ahead.
