NEW AMSTERDAM Post-Mortem: Jocko Sims on the Ramifications of Max and Karen’s Big Swing

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Tuesday, November 16 episode, “In a Strange Land.”]

Karen (Debra Monk) finally reached the end of her rope with Dr. Fuentes (Michelle Forbes) on the Tuesday, November 16 episode of NEW AMSTERDAM.

When a group of undocumented citizens ended up in the hospital—thanks to an accidental church fire—ICE surrounded New Amsterdam. Max (Ryan Eggold), naturally, was ready to do whatever possible to prevent their capture; Fuentes insisted they couldn’t sacrifice the space in the hospital to prevent the inevitable.

Karen, however, finally realized Fuentes wasn’t the right person to be in charge of the hospital, so she and Max set out to oust her at a board meeting. Karen made her case to board members, with some onboard and others a bit more skeptical. But when it came time for the coup, Karen called a vote to oust Fuentes…and didn’t have the numbers. Fuentes, however, turned the table and called for Karen to be removed—and she had enough votes to pull it off.

Now, with Fuentes all too aware how she was nearly stabbed in the back—and Karen gone—how will the doctors be handling the latest blow?

“With Reynolds, it’s business as usual,” Jocko Sims, who plays Dr. Reynolds, says in the video below. “They’re in the business of taking care of people. And at the end of the day, it may make it difficult depending on the leader—you have different obstacles to get care to those patients—but these guys are really darn good at focusing on those patients. And [at] finding a way to maneuver around these obstacles.”

“They’ve been trained by the best: Max,” he continues. “Even though there’s some void there for the champion of the people, we now have these very trained warriors who are going to make it happen.”
