NEW AMSTERDAM Post-Mortem: Jocko Sims Teases Malvo’s Bombshell Causes Reynolds to ‘Start to See the World Differently’

NEW AMSTERDAM’s Reynolds (Jocko Sims) may have told Malvo (Frances Turner) he was up for a complicated relationship, but this was a turn he didn’t see coming: She’s pregnant. (And it’s unclear whether he or her husband is the father.)

“This changes Reynolds a bit,” Sims admitted in the video below. “We will see him start to see the world differently. Just the prospect of him potentially becoming a father is changing him.”

“There’s a poignant moment we have coming up in a later episode, that we haven’t filmed yet, where Reynolds is alone, thinking something else going on in the scene in the background that gives you the impression that he’s thinking about fatherhood,” Sims continued. “I think it’s great; I actually can’t wait to shoot it.”

NEW AMSTERDAM showrunner David Schulner teased the show will “keep [Reynolds] twisting for a little bit” about the baby’s paternity, noting “it’s really fun, scary, and exciting to see what the character does not knowing who the real father is.” And Sims echoed that Reynolds may not handle the looming question entirely well.

“I wouldn’t say he’s actively pushing to find out, but there is a moment we have coming up where he is curious,” Sims said. “And…an opportunity comes along to possibly find out. And [Malvo’s husband] Baptiste is curious as well, and we kind of joined forces to get to the bottom of this at Lynn’s expense, unfortunately. We don’t involve her, and more importantly, we’re not putting her first in that in that process. She looks at it like a pissing contest, forgetting that she’s going through things herself—her and the child. It’s very, very interesting family moments coming up.”

While possible impending fatherhood awaits him, Reynolds will have to figure out how he’s going to approach things if he’s not the child’s father.

“That’s something that is brought up just beautifully that we shot last week,” Sims teased. “Because [the pregnancy] comes out of nowhere…But we do address it. And it’s just such a great scene between Reynolds and Baptiste.”
