NEW AMSTERDAM Boss David Schulner Explains Why Veronica is Sticking Around
November 30, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
When NEW AMSTERDAM returns in 2022, the doctors at the titular hospital won’t just have to cope with the loss of Max (Ryan Eggold) and Helen (Freema Agyeman)—they’ll be left alone to deal with Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes), the hospital’s new boss, who has both cut hundreds of employees and survived a coup attempt.
“All of our characters are professionally and personally put through the wringer,” NEW AMSTERDAM boss David Schulner says. “And we’ll see if they come out the other side.”
While it might seem to be a given the core characters will come out of the experience (relatively) unscathed, the showrunner acknowledges his plans for Fuentes have already changed.
“To be perfectly honest, Michelle Forbes was only supposed to do maybe ten episodes for us,” Schulner says. “But the more we wrote her character, the more we saw what Michelle was bringing to the show, we realized there’s no way Max could defeat her in ten episodes. There’s just no way our characters could align and oust her from the show. So, the force of Michelle Forbes’ talent has made her impossible to defeat.”
Schulner previously teased that with the hospital remade in Veronica’s image, an unlikely person will step up to the plate: “Dr. Wilder has started an underground resistance…[she] is going to fight the good fight and carry on Max’s legacy as best as she can. The only question is, will our characters help?”
Looking ahead, the writers are still trying to figure out how Fuentes’ arc plays out—and if the doctors will find a way to break free from her.
“We’re approaching the end game [of the season] in the writers’ room, and we’re trying to outfox Veronica,” Schulner previews. “But it’s proving impossible. She’s the most formidable foe we’ve ever created. And God help us, because we want to get rid of her, too, but we can’t thus far.”
