THE VOICE: Wendy Moten on Performing ‘Jolene’ While Injured
November 30, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
On the Tuesday, November 23 live results episode of THE VOICE, Wendy Moten had just finished a group performance with coach Blake Shelton and her fellow members of Team Blake when she took a hard fall.
The singer had to be helped off the stage, and host Carson Daly brought her back after the commercial break to reassure viewers she was okay. “I’m a little bruised, but you know what? I’m still ready to go,” she said at the time.
But the injuries ended up being a bit more serious than expected.
“I broke my right elbow, and…my left hand is fractured—I got a piece broken in my hand,” Moten told reporters. “However, I’ve been able to maintain the pain. I was ready to go to rehearsal as soon as I left the hospital. So I’m just gonna go with it.”
But, as Moten said during the Monday, November 29 Top 10 performance, the show must go on, and she said Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” for a chance to make the semi-finals.
Even with the physical restrictions, Moten said her two casts didn’t change much of how she would have performed the iconic song.
“Singing a song like ‘Jolene’ tonight, it’s the way I would want to sing it,” she explained in the video below. “In country music, they stand still a lot. And so moving too much is almost like telling the wrong story. I think it was perfect that I had to just be kind of stoic and just tell the story. So I didn’t want to go through this much pain, but, hey, I survived.”
