Things may not have been going exactly as planned for LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Carisi (Peter Scanavino) on the career front, but they are going decidedly better for him with his personal life.

After years of close friendship (and more than a little pining), former partners Carisi and Rollins (Kelli Giddish) finally decided to move forward with their relationship at Fin’s (Ice T) non-wedding at the end of season 22. Now, the duo are together, but viewers have only seen glimpses of how things have changed.

“It’s a very serious relationship that’s moving along nicely,” Scanavino says. “But they also have to contend with the jobs that they have. I think they’re very aware that this isn’t something they can take lightly or speak about openly—I don’t think they’ve fully decided how they’re going to proceed with this.”

To that end, the duo hasn’t officially disclosed the change in their relationship, which could cause some professional trouble for the ADA and detective.

“They’re fully aware that this could have potential downsides in the future, particularly if they get involved in a case where he’s prosecuting and she’s investigating and he has to call her on the stand—that would be a big deal,” he allows. “I think they’re just kind of glad that they haven’t been put in that position as of yet. But they know it’s got to be just around the corner.”

Scanavino shares he’s talked with the writers about “a few different ideas” for how the coupling might be made public.

“We’ve definitely talked about it, the issues, which really raises the stakes for that relationship,” he says. “So I don’t think we’re taking the implications of the relationship lightly, but we’re definitely not taking the relationship lightly, either. It’s one of those things where we don’t want to give up anything.”

But after being together for more than six months—and with much of the relationship occurring off-screen—have viewers missed the couple’s first “I love you”?

“I don’t know; I think that would be nice to see on-screen, if it happens,” Scanavino says with a laugh. “I haven’t really thought about it, but I think it’s definitely implied. And, also, we’re not spring chickens. When you’re at the age that we are, I don’t think you mess around. When something is real, you feel it, and you take it seriously.”
