LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT Recap: Carisi and Rollins Make a Big Decision in ‘If I Knew Then What I Know Now’

After spending all season hiding their relationship, LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and Rollins (Kelli Giddish) finally took a step forward in their romance in “If I Knew Then What I Know Now.”
The issue came to a head when Jesse, Rollins’ oldest daughter, asked Carisi a question on behalf of her younger sister, Billie: Was he Billie’s dad? Rollins deflected, but Carisi warned her, “Sooner or later we’re going to have to deal with this.” (Rollins’ ex, Al, fathered Billie.)
But as Carisi got close to the adopted father of a young woman who was reeling over the discovery that she was the product of rape—and Rollins and Benson (Mariska Hargitay) tried to crack the cold case—it was clear his patience with their secret relationship was running out.
“Come on, Rollins,” he told her. “You won’t tell the people we work with or your kids that we’re involved. You haven’t even told Billie who her father is…I get it, you grew up having to compartmentalize, it’s a survival [technique]…I don’t want to be Uncle Sonny forever. We’re nine months in, Amanda, and your kids still don’t know who I am to you?”
“So which is it: Do you want me to disclose our relationship to NYPD or just to Jesse and Billie?” Rollins replied. “My dad? How about your parents? How come I haven’t met them yet?”
“Because you don’t want my mom to know that you’re my girlfriend,” he answered. “I’m gonna bring a colleague home for Sunday dinner? Do you know how strange that would be?”
Rollins acknowledged she didn’t want that pressure, but Carisi made it clear they needed a change. “I’m sorry, I just don’t want to live like this anymore,” he said. “I feel like I got a live hand grenade in my pocket, and if this comes up during a trial, that’s going to blow up in our faces.”
He asked her what kind of time she needed, and noted he had informally checked it out and they would be okay, career-wise, if they disclosed. “I don’t want to push you someplace that you don’t want to go,” he said. “But what are we doing? Are we going to try to make this work or not?”
“Are you seriously asking that?” she replied. “Because I’ve never been this open, honest in a relationship.”
Ultimately, Rollins opted to take the leap, telling Benson about her relationship—and that Carisi was also going to disclose to his bosses.
“Good,” Benson said. “That is a very smart thing to do. And Rollins? I’m very happy for you.”
With that out of the way—though Rollins acknowledged that Benson didn’t exactly seem surprised by the reveal—Rollins and Carisi made plans to go home and tell the truth to her daughters.
The move was a long time coming, with Scanavino hinting last year that things might be more serious than viewers had seen on-screen. “When you’re at the age that we are, I don’t think you mess around,” he said at the time. “When something is real, you feel it, and you take it seriously.””
