LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME’s Nova (Nona Parker Johnson) took a big step in her undercover assignment, as she was officially promoted to second-in-command of the Marcy Killers.

While some people within the Marcy Killers organization weren’t thrilled (a little stabbing to the hand can do wonders to change the mood, though), the shift presents big opportunities and big challenges for Nova.

“It’s really the relationships within the Marcy Killer organization [that could cause problems],” Johnson explains in the video below. “It’s her relationship with Hugo, and what it would mean for that dynamic that they’ve had. And definitely how she’s going to use this opportunity to further the investigation and how best to do that. Not to worry Bell and not to put her brother in any danger, as well.”

However, Nova’s brother, Derrick (Jordane Christie)—who doesn’t know she’s undercover—was unwittingly drawn into her world in the last episode. When Nova was at church, watching her brother preach, she was shocked to see her boss, Webb (Mykelti Williamson), come in.

“That’s where the discomfort comes with getting even closer to Webb is—that as she gets close to Webb, Webb also simultaneously gets closer to her,” Johnson notes. “So it was a super unfortunate coincidence that Webb attends the church that her brother was preaching at. And I think, from there, she’s kind of just having to roll with whatever happens. Because Webb is her boss, and she’s his second-in-command. And so he, just being who he is, dictates this level of interpersonal relationships. He wants to clearly develop this relationship with his second-in-command, which in turn involves her brother in a way that she definitely did not want to happen.”

And things aren’t exactly getting easier. In the Thursday, March 17 episode, “Guns & Roses,” Marcy Killers’ Hugo (Antino Crowley-Kamenwati) lands on the Organized Crime Control Bureau’s radar, much to Nova’s chagrin.

“It happens super fast for her,” Johnson teases of trying to balance the two worlds amidst the new drama. “It’s almost like she’s not making the best decisions in real time; she’s really only thinking about Hugo. And so I think we’ll see that line she’s been riding—she tips over a little bit into the Marcy Killers side of it, because her focus is heavily on Hugo’s safety and his innocence.”
