About Last Night…AMERICAN SONG CONTEST and AMERICAN IDOL

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!
AMERICAN SONG CONTEST: As someone who has never seen EUROVISION, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I definitely didn’t expect some of the acts to lip sync, which was an odd thing to witness in a competition like this. On the other hand, I guess some of it is supposed to be about the song versus the best vocals, and some of the established musicians had an advantage the non-household names didn’t have, so…
After the first episode, I almost wish it was either a bit more bonkers or a bit more stripped down. My early favorites were Hueston (very glad he’s already through), Kelsey Lamb, Christian Pagán, and Michael Bolton; I’m curious to see how the country votes.
AMERICAN IDOL: I’m so, so glad they had a fake contestant auditioning when Luke Bryan’s wife pranked him. It seemed obvious something was going on—because why show us someone forgetting to turn their ringer off?—but I was worried it was a real person trying to audition and I felt awful for them. Finding out they were in on the prank, too, made it a lot more enjoyable.
It was a slightly underwhelming final audition episode, though. Jay Copeland was great, but it even felt like his audition wasn’t so undeniably jaw-dropping that the Platinum Ticket was a no-brainer. (Honestly, I appreciated their earlier approach of giving it after the auditions were done to verify they gave it to the right person.)
