About Last Night…AMERICAN SONG CONTEST and AMERICAN IDOL
March 29, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!AMERICAN SONG CONTEST: This was an interesting episode. On one hand, I think the songs were much stronger this week; even the songs that weren’t my personal style, it felt like they had a lot more potential to be actual hits.
On the other, I’m so curious to see how someone like Jordan Smith moves through the next round of competition. There are absolutely points to be made about how some artists (Michael Bolton, Macy Gracy, Sisqo) have decades of fan love at their disposal, but someone like Jordan has won a singing competition because of fan votes. So I’m really intrigued to see if that ends up being a bigger boost in terms of fans already being used to showing their love for him.
AMERICAN IDOL: Hollywood Week is always so much. And while I know it’s absolutely prime for drama, one of the reason it bums me out is so many audition standouts get cut…and frequently it’s blink and you miss it. It’s a hard swap to go from being invested to trying to detach at least for the start of this round.
The Platinum Ticket winners getting to pick their duet partners should be interesting—you’d hope they wouldn’t try to pick someone who is noticeably weaker, if only because that risks taking their entire song down? We’ll see…
