With CHICAGO FIRE’s Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) new relationship raising eyebrows—and drawing snide jabs about it causing favoritism for Firehouse 51—the duo attempted to stay away from each other…but it didn’t quite last as long as they intended.

At the end of “Keep You Safe,” Hawkins showed up outside of Violet’s apartment, and she joked with him about not being able to keep his distance.

“Well, that’s subjective,” he retorted. But, he noted, more seriously, “Turns out, staying away—that’s not so easy.”

Violet agreed, noting it was “maybe because we’re not supposed to be apart,” before leading him inside her apartment.

Though CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Derek Haas noted to reporters during One Chicago Day that Violet and Hawkins have “great chemistry and [are] really fun to write for,” the writers have adjusted where they’ve taken the unexpected couple after seeing how they pop.

“We loved Violet and Gallo together, and Hawkins was going to be a smaller part of that arc,” executive producer Andrea Newman acknowledged in the video below. “And then when we saw these two actors and the chemistry between them, and the way they were, the way they popped together on screen, we really did some rejiggering and extended that relationship, and it’s just getting stronger and stronger as it goes because these these guys are so great together.”

“So it’s really fun to write them; there’s all sorts of problems in their way, which is fun to navigate,” she continued. “And we’re really excited about the way Gallo plays into it, as well. That whole mess of it.”

Greensmith, who previously gushed to Give Me My Remote about the “genuine and wonderful and special” relationship Violet had found with Hawkins, acknowledged the vocal reaction to them

“I was definitely surprised by it,” she admitted. “I didn’t think the audience was going to take to it quite as strongly as they did. I’m very, very happy that they did, because that means that it’s working and it’s believable and people are invested. And I have so much fun working with Jimmy; he’s such a goofball….And I also love Alberto [Rosende] and I also love Gallo.”
