CHICAGO P.D. Recap: Burzek Make a Big Decision About their Future

CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) opted to take a step back from their undefined relationship—at least for now—on the Wednesday, April 6 episode, “Adrift.”
With the duo in a “fragile” place in the aftermath of Makayla’s (Ramona Edith Williams) kidnapping (and subsequent recovery), the co-parents worked to get their daughter back on a schedule that would help her recovery from the traumatic experience. However, with things in flux, Ruzek went undercover to help and old friend out…and immediately got in over his head.
Though Ruzek was able to pull it off for a bit–complete with an undercover home base—he was forced to take drugs to maintain his cover, which made him collapse. Burgess and the team were able to save him, but it proved to be a quasi-wake-up call.
“I’m sorry, Kim,” Ruzek told his co-parent when he was released from the hospital. “I know things have been hard. I know that we’re…”
“We’re not us right now,” Burgess acknowledged.
“I’m lying there dying, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘My God, this is how I’m going to go out. With everything broken,'” he admitted. “No. Never again. I want to fix it. I want our family back to the way it was.”
After Burgess admitted she wanted that, too, Ruzek apologized for his reckless actions while Makayla was missing. “I know I disappointed you when she was taken,” he said. “Maybe we start with a schedule that works better for us. We keep talking, you know?”
But Burgess was less sure that was the right way to go. “The thing is it’s been working,” she said. “This week, Makayla, she seemed better with me. I don’t know what to do here, Adam. I don’t know how to fix it.”
Ultimately, Ruzek opted to put his family first: “So we do what’s best for her. We do what’s best for her for now.” To better facilitate that, Ruzek returned to his undercover apartment.
And while this is another hurdle for the would-be couple, Squerciati previously did offer a bit of hope to reporters at One Chicago Day. “I do ultimately think that they belong together—just not quite yet.”
