Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

LAW & ORDER: The case was depressing as hell, but it felt like the episode gelled together well. And Sam remains an absolute delight.

MASTERCHEF JUNIOR: To go from donuts to that mystery box challenge…what whiplash. (Also: I’ve tried durian. NEVER AGAIN.) It will never fail to impress me how much these kids know, because being able to whip up donuts feels like a vastly different skill set than, say, cooking frog legs?!

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: I really, really wish we had been able to get this Velasco-centric episode even a little earlier in the season. We’ve had really brief moments where he was able to shine (his dynamic with Rollins has been the most fun, so far, for me), but this actually allowed him to feel like a part of the team. (Good for him for having enough sense to not wake up Olivia or Fin in the middle of the night when he was caught going rogue, though.)

It also wasn’t a total win—they lost a good cop, caught a bad one; unfortunately not all of the girls made it—but I’m hoping this helps Velasco feel more comfortable in his not-quite-new unit.

Also, Fin is frequently funny, but he made me actually laugh a few times last night, from his crack about people not liking a bakery full of cops or his incredibly unsubtle pivot from Rollins and Carisi’s family vacation to questioning Benson about Stabler.

GREY’S ANATOMY: While Bailey bringing up Meredith’s unconventional start with Derek was a low blow, my goodness did I get emotional at the old footage from season 1 (and other older scenes). They have such history together, and I get why Bailey would be both emotionally and professionally floundering in that moment.

I feel awful for Bailey now trying to figure out how the hell to save the program. Will Meredith just choose to not go and Kai will come to Seattle?

(Also, what will it take for Peter Gallagher and Chris Carmack to share a scene together?!)

LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME: Protect Bernie Stabler at all costs. (Also, Eli, please, no more stealing your grandmother’s meds.)

The parallels between Bell and Nova being backed into corners by their loved ones (Bell’s wife and Nova’s brother, respectively) and having drastically different reactions to it…well, it’s making me worried for different reasons.

Ayanna should absolutely be telling Denise the truth about Kilbride, because it’s endangering her, both professionally and personally—if/when she’s successful with this operation, Denise could have a very difficult time forgiving her.

On the flip side, well, I’m worried about Nova’s brother now that he knows the truth. If he doesn’t have a good poker face…

I know the Cragen scene was brief, but I loved it. Elliot was, clearly, floundering at the notion that his father was bad in every aspect of his life, and went to the solid father figure/role model he did have. And he didn’t have the answers, but he did have comfort.

At first, I was a bit bummed we got no context about what relationship, if any, Cragen/Elliot had at the very least since the latter returned to NY and zero conversation about Elliot’s loss/return to NYPD/reunion with Olivia. But Dann Florek’s point that Cragen was focused on the immediate emergency in front of him, which didn’t leave a lot of room for small talk, actually helped, a lot, for me? (And the final line from Elliot…said so much.) I hope we can see Elliot and Cragen together again soon, in hopefully less dire circumstances.

[For more from Florek about the reunion scene and if he might return to the L&O world, here’s what he had to say.]
