LAW & ORDER Recruits SVU’s Mariska Hargitay and Terry Serpico for Season Finale

LAW & ORDER is getting a couple of very special visitors in its season finale: spinoff LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Mariska Hargitay (who plays Captain Olivia Benson) and Terry Serpico (who plays Chief McGrath).

In the hour, airing Thursday, May 19, a case gets very personal for Detective Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan). “It’s an emotional episode, involving the death of an off-duty police officer…who is a good friend of Detective Cosgrove,” LAW & ORDER boss Rick Eid teases. “So that’s what brings Benson into the mix.”

But how well did Benson know the slain cop? “Benson is peripherally involved in the case,” Eid previews. “Cosgrove and Benard need to talk to her about something. She’s connected and it’s organic; they need information from her.”

As for McGrath, “this a police shooting,” Eid notes. “It’s big news, and he’s part of some of these senior conversations going on between the police department, the District Attorney’s Office, the mayor’s office, about how to proceed.”

Hargitay previously appeared as Benson three times during the mothership’s original run; Serpico appeared twice as non-McGrath characters.

Update (May 2): Here’s the official logline for the finale, “Black and Blue”: “The murder of an off-duty NYPD detective threatens to tear the city apart. Cosgrove mourns the loss of a friend and asks Capt. Benson for help solving the case. McCoy and Price disagree on how to prosecute the culprit, sparking sharp condemnation from all sides.”
