TRANSPLANT: Hamza Haq Teases Bash’s Conundrum in the Season 2 Finale
July 15, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
As TRANSPLANT’s sophomore season comes to an end, Bash (Hamza Haq) finds himself in quite the predicament: The lawsuit that is tormenting the hospital staff—thanks to an angry father, who is unhappy with the care his daughter received—is threatening his medical career, since the opposing lawyers discovered that Bishop (John Hannah) may have pulled strings to get Bash his job.
“Since season 1, this thing has been an issue…and now with this impending lawsuit, it’s becoming more and more an issue,” Haq acknowledges in the video below. “And I think both of them—Bashir and Dr. Bishop—are desperate to make sure that nobody is a casualty of this circumstance. If Bash has to take the hit, he’s willing to do it, but he’s not willing to sacrifice anybody else’s career or livelihood.”
“I think he’s happy to do that, because he understands the reality of his situation,” he continues. “Bishop, on the other hand, see so much potential and considers Bash so deserving of this opportunity in ways that maybe Bash doesn’t see for himself, and he’s willing to fight for that. So they kind of butt heads on the priorities that each of them have.”
While Bash and Bishop don’t see eye to eye, Haq enjoyed playing the “nice little tussle that the two of them have,” he says. “John, being such a generous actor and such a strong presence—it was so much fun to play with him in that space.”
Though U.S. audiences are experiencing the finale for the first time now, the episode originally ran in Canada this spring. With Haq busy filming season 3 of TRANSPLANT right now, “I’m reliving [the end of season 2] in real time right now [with the interview],” he jokes. “I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, we did do that…that was really cool.’ Because I didn’t watch it live as it was coming out in Canada, even the first time…I convinced [creator] Joe [Kay] to send me early screenings of each episode. So I’ve watched the episode probably coming up on a year [ago; that’s] how long it’s been since I’ve thought about the end of season 2.”
Haq, who also jumped back on social media for the first time in a while and was pleased to see the TRANSPLANT love, notes “it’s kind of nice to go back there…it is a nostalgic experience for me now. Like, it’s been long enough—weeks feel like months these days and months feel like years, and, man, 2019 was a decade ago…it is a little surreal.”
