BIG BROTHER, THE CHALLENGE USA, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

“Liberty and Justice for All” – Players take on one of hosts TJ Lavin’s favorite challenges, trivia, while hanging over the ledge of a 30-story building, on MTV presents THE CHALLENGE: USA, Wednesday, July 27 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

BIG BROTHER: Why could Turner have not subbed in someone for Jasmine considering she passed out? Good lord.

It feels abundantly clear that most of these contestants are not actually right for this show. I don’t know why/how, but it feels like they wanted drama at the expense of personal well-being. And, look, I get reality competitions have a very, very, very long history of manipulating contestants and situations for ~television magic~. But this feels gross and it’s verging on the point where I just want to throw in the towel on this season.

MASTERCHEF: In some ways, it’s actually shocking Tommy made it this far. He’s struggled so many weeks, it felt like it was only a mater of time. But, yikes, that was a mess. And at least Shelly and Bri had a few good things said about their dishes, even if both clearly were not close to okay, either. (I know Shelly’s was the hardest, but how did it end up so mangled on the plate?!)

THE CHALLENGE USA: Uh, wow, wow, wow to David and Justine knocking out X and Shan. But even more shocking was how nasty X and Shan were when they were eliminated. I get they wanted to win! They were tough and blindsided. But that sure was a choice to be so petty in their final confessionals.

(TJ’s absolute glee about the contestants’ terror of being dropped during Trivia, though, was absolutely unhinged.)

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: It’s absolutely no secret I’ve had issues with this season, and this week’s episode was no exception. If you’re going to have people go randomly up against each other, at least have the judges have a vote? Even if it’s weighted 25% per judge and then the in-studio audience get the final 25%.

And, frankly, losing three contestants at once, like this, is a mess. Cut two this week and two next week! As it was, we saw a couple of trio performances before the head-to-head. It just…felt like a mess. And I can’t properly convey how much it bothers me that good dance seems to be the show’s third or fourth (at best) priority at this point.
