About Last Night…AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, MASTERCHEF, PASSWORD, and More

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: Well, it was arguably the best top 5 possible, but that also meant more than half of the acts went home. I’m so, so, so happy Yu Hojin went through, and Chapel Hart is absolutely deserving, too.
I know Simon defended the new format this season, but, man…there’s a difference between good TV and being the best things for the acts. Look at someone like Mr. Pants: You need multiple showings to be like, nope, he really doesn’t have more (at least right now) than his initial set. Doing two performances and it being finale time doesn’t allow people the room to grow. And looking to reality show history: How many non-winners went on to become huge stars? It’s harder to do that when the public only has a couple of opportunities to see you. Alas.
MASTERCHEF: The tag-team competition ended up being a lot less dramatic than I expected—and that’s fine. Yes, a lot of the dishes were messes, but there wasn’t overwhelmingly bad behavior. (It’s sad that feels like a victory.)
The elevation of the takeout seemed wildly hard, though. There are so many ways to elevate a burger, but as it was pointed out, simply making ramen in the time frame they had was going to be rough. Poor Fred had two episodes in a row where he had issues with his dough…and the wonton-meatball hybrid ended up being his downfall on the show.
THE CHALLENGE USA: I laughed out loud when Tyson and Sarah got partnered up. She’s, uh, still holding a grudge.
This ball and chain challenge feels more dangerous than normal? If they fell with that medicine ball, it feels like it could have killed someone?! But good for Alyssa and Leo pulling out the win. (And a big laugh at them getting a cat question.)
PASSWORD: Okay, but was the “Itchy”/”Scratchy” combo an homage to THE SIMPSONS?! It could have just been a related guess, but I will always associate that duo with the animated cat and mouse.
I really loved the touch of the classic players. It would have been fun to have the full hour be that, but I was delighted with what we got and the old footage.
Also, Jimmy struggling with “mail” and “shave” when the clues were so, so obvious is very funny since they were able to win the contestant the $25k. (Sorry, Jimmy.)
But Jimmy and Martin Short were a lot of fun together. It’s delicate when someone is such an iconic comedian, because Martin could have very easily have spiraled into just trying to be funny…I’m glad he took it seriously enough to try and help his contestant, too.
