LAW & ORDER: Rick Eid Teases Insight into Price and Dixon in Season 22
September 15, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
A blast from Price’s (Hugh Dancy) past shakes things up when GRIMM’s Claire Coffee guest stars as a lawyer taking on a high-profile case in LAW & ORDER season 22.
“She’s got an interesting role in an episode that involves a pretty horrible crime: a mass shooting event with a racial component; she represents the killer,” LAW & ORDER boss Rick Eid teases to Give Me My Remote. “And we learn that she and Price have some history together—they went to law school together. In this particular case, for a variety of reasons, they’re seeking the death penalty.”
Naturally, that causes tension between the two lawyers. “Price is not a proponent of the death penalty, but based on the way this case lays out, he doesn’t have much of a choice in the matter but to purse that,” he continues. “And the Claire Coffee character is outraged that the Nolan Price she knew—and possibly had a romantic relationship with—would actually be doing such a thing.”
While the plan, for now, is for Coffee to appear in an episode, Eid—who spoke last season about wanting a “stable of [possibly] eight to 10 defense lawyers that can do two or three episodes in the season”—the showrunner teases a return could be in the works. “We’re definitely considering that as a possibility,” he says. “Everything’s on the table.”
And Price won’t be the only character viewers will learn more about in the upcoming season.
“We hope the first batch of episodes sheds some light on who these people are,” Eid previews. “The challenges [and] the complexities of their job, the workload they have, and how they see the world and how they try to get justice.”
“[This season,] we find out Dixon signs fluently and has a deaf son,” he continues. “We see her signing with a witness and she references that her son is deaf. And in real life, Camryn [Manheim, who plays Dixon] is fluent in sign language, and is a big advocate. She’s been asking to incorporate that into the show, so we’re excited to do that. We may see the son [later]—you never know.”
