About Last Night…ONE CHICAGO, THE MASKED SINGER, and ABBOTT ELEMENTARY

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!
CHICAGO MED: OH, HELLO APRIL. I think I yelped when she popped up in the episode, and it remains my favorite surprise of the TV season. I’m excited to see what they do with her the next time she comes back.
The start of the episode was absolutely badass, too. Will on that ladder! And a couple of our CHICAGO FIRE friends. I love, love, love the mini-crossovers, and they did a good job of interweaving the world in a small, authentic way.
Admittedly, I’m sad to lose Dylan. I can absolutely see how his story is done, but at the same time, he was interesting. Alas.

THE MASKED SINGER: Well, I guessed William Shatner instantly; I’m not sure what that says about me. I hate that this new format means they can, technically, give us cliffhangers every week. No thanks??
I’m not really enjoying this format one week in. Yes, who should go clear was abundantly clear, but unless you have a really bad crop of contestants, why get rid of so many singers so fast? (I know, I know—”more exciting TV.” I guess the good thing is this is just celebs competing for fun rather than my grievances against AGT and SYTYCD.)
CHICAGO FIRE: Another fire (no pun intended) opening, with that absolutely badass Stellaride honeymoon gone awry. Did they deserve to have a happy bubble? Of course. But, wow, they remain incredible together at, well, everything.
I’m happy that Violet and Hawkins got their act together, but I’ll admit to being pretty bummed by the Brett/Casey breakup. Was it, likely, inevitable? Sure. When one of the actors is no longer on the show, it’s really, really, really hard to sustain any kind of real relationship, long-term, because it short-changes the actor who remains. But if they had to break up, I wish it had been done at a time when Jesse Spencer was actually there so the relationship could get closure in a real way, rather than a one-sided phone call.

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY: Oh, I’m so glad to have this show back. And I don’t care if it’s basic as hell, I laughed at the Gritty of it all, especially when Jacob had to serve as translator. BUT SOMEONE GIVE JANINE A HUG, PLEASE. (And maybe a step stool so she can better reach her plates.)
[For more on that Gritty guest spot, here’s what the cast shared.]
CHICAGO P.D.: Continuing the badass thread on the CHICAGOs, HOLY TORRES MOVE NEAR THE END.
I’m so glad we are getting Torres, but I’m also really bummed we’re getting him right as Halstead is leaving, because their dynamic together last season and in the premiere was electric. Sigh.
Watching the Voight, Halstead, and Upton shenanigans go down is, frankly, heartbreaking. It would be one thing if we knew this was going to be a season-long arc, but we know, to some degree, where this is going, and fast. Everything is so—as showrunner Gwen Sigan said—tense, and the trio is so entangled. No, it doesn’t seem sustainable, long-term, for them to keep working the way they are, but it’s simply hard to imagine this show without Halstead.
[For more on the premiere, here’s what Sigan and Jason Beghe shared.]
