The NEW AMSTERDAM Team on Opening Up ‘New Possibilities’ for the Characters in Season 5
September 27, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
With everyone’s lives, frankly, a bit of a mess on NEW AMSTERDAM, the final season will give the characters “new possibilities, second chances,” executive producer David Schulner tells Give Me My Remote in the video below.
“When you know it’s your final season, you want to close it up,” he explains. “But I think we’re going to do the opposite. And we’re going to open up new possibilities for all the characters and kind of show where they could [go] in season 6 in people’s minds—give everyone a new launching point.”
“One of the reasons I kind of love that we ended last season with everyone’s relationships blowing up…[in the aftermath,] you have to recreate yourself, open up—it’s the only way to get through it,” adds executive producer Peter Horton. “So what are the journeys that are going to happen based on the rubble that’s left behind of these relationships? And where does that go?”
As the show gets into the thick of its final season, the cast, crew, and viewers will soon be approaching all sorts of “last” moments. How involved are the actors getting in the process?
“David and the writers don’t need my input, because they’ve done an amazing job, thus far, writing an incredible show,” series star Ryan Eggold (who plays Max) acknowledges. “But David and Peter are also very kind and generous about letting us have thoughts on our characters. There’s a million things I would love to see with Max; I would need 12 more seasons to explore all of them. But I was very curious about the end, myself. And I asked David, ‘Is there kind of an idea of where this may end yet?'”
Schulner shared with Eggold his plan—which, yes, Schulner confirms, is still the way they intended to end the series months ago—and “it caught me off guard,” Eggold says. “It was very surprising, and very touching, and felt like the show. And it felt like an ending and a beginning. It was lovely. So, yeah, I’ll leave that to David to to write and deliver to us all.”
