THE ROOKIE: Alexi Hawley Teases Nyla’s ‘Dynamic’ Labor Episode

It’s almost time for THE ROOKIE’s Nyla (Mekia Cox) to give birth—but it seems a peaceful labor, with everything going according to a birth plan, isn’t exactly in the cards.

“For the last show baby, Lopez got abducted and taken to Guatemala,” THE ROOKIE boss Alexi Hawley notes to Give Me My Remote. “So we do feel a responsibility that nobody can just have a kid easily on our show. So there is a very dynamic episode of Nyla’s birth experience, which is one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done.”

When Nyla returns to work, post-maternity leave, the series will be diving into her new partnership. “We set up at the end of last season that Lopez-Harper partnership is going to be cemented,” Hawley previews. “Now, we’ll definitely lean into the working mom of it all—both of them have young kids and how they navigate that, to comedic effect, but also real world. I like that we’ve we’ve never shied away from from that aspect of it. Whether it’s the fridge in the break room breaking and [Lopez]’s pumping—it’s a real world problem, but yet we can have some fun with it. But still, the stakes were real. The working mom [angle], we have to be true to that.”

“He’s gonna play a DEA agent who ends up in our universe because of an old case of his,” Hawley teases. “His undercover partner got killed, and he’s been on the hunt ever since for the killer. So he’ll come into our universe on that story.”
