Though Benjamin Levy Aguilar‘s Officer Dante Torres was first introduced in the CHICAGO P.D. world last season, season 10 marks his first year as a regular on the show. And as Torres is finding his footing within the Intelligence Unit, Aguilar is going through a similar journey as he navigates joining a long-running show.

“It makes my job so much easier,” he says with a laugh in the video below. “The love that I have received off-screen—and the welcome energy—as I’m learning being a series regular on this show…the set and to pace myself, energy-wise, and shooting 22 episodes, and all these things, it’s the same…type of pressure that he must be feeling coming in. And it’s…a mirror, it’s literally art imitating life, and it makes my job a lot easier. And it’s been beautiful, in both ways.”

“There’s been beautiful connections on-screen and there’s been just as many beautiful connections off-screen, if not more,” he continues. “I really love the people I’m working with and I’ve made friends that are real.”

Aguilar and Torres have their first big episode of the season with the Wednesday, October 12 hour, “Donde Vives,” as a case hits very, very close to home for the officer.

“It is as close as the word can mean,” Aguilar previews. “It is his [concern for his] mother that he’s protected since he was a little boy. He became the man of the house at 14 years old. And nothing is more important for him than his mother and his loved ones. And this case brings him right into the middle of his family, and the people that he’s taken bullets for growing up and protected.”

“He’s gonna have to navigate a gray area of what is right and what is going to hurt people that he loves,” he continues. “But is it worth it? Should I do it? What is the right thing? I don’t think there’s much thinking in those moments. I think it’s very driven by his gut feeling, and who he is as a person, and what he wants to do in the world, and how he wants to break cycles, that makes him really capable of doing this job inside his neighborhood—or outside his neighborhood.”

In the early episodes, Torres leaned on Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). But with Halstead now in Bolivia, Torres will get a bit closer to his other new colleagues.

“Definitely Atwater, because there’s been a lot of moments where they’ve taken cases, and that just gets you close,” Aguilar says. “And they come from a very similar background, which makes them able to speak the same language, and to share things about their past.”

“But I also think that from the moments that maybe don’t make it on screen—either because of time or because they haven’t been written yet—but I can see the [other] connections,” he continues. “There’s definitely a lot to learn from Voight. And a special connection with Upton, because they both kind of lost Halstead, in a way, and I’m excited to see when that shows on screen.”
