CHICAGO P.D.’s LaRoyce Hawkins: ‘Every Empathetic Bone’ in Atwater ‘is Going to Be Tested’

A hit and run sets off a chain of events that spirals out of control on the Wednesday, November 2 episode of CHICAGO P.D.

For Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), who ends up in crossfire after an arrest gets widespread public attention, “it was truly just a perfect storm,” Hawkins tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “It was impossible for anybody to walk away from that situation dry.”

As he tries to weather the difficult storm in “Sympathetic Reflex,” “every empathetic bone in Atwater’s body is going to be tested,” Hawkins acknowledges. “It’s gonna be extremely difficult for him to navigate the circumstances, because, as usual, he’s going to feel like he has little to no support from the Chicago Police Department. [It’s] really gonna be up to him to save himself and to keep himself in the pocket.”

In addition to his normal allies in Intelligence, Atwater has also been learning to rely on his new partner Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar).

“For a long time, Atwater has been considered a little brother of the unit,” Hawkins says. “And to to be in a position now, of big bro, where you can pass down some wisdom and your knowledge from what you’ve learned, through your experience over time, that feels great. That feels great for Atwater, that feels great for LaRoyce. I think young Benjamin and young [Torres] have so much potential…and I think they’re perfect for the unit.”

“We miss Jay, and you can’t replace Jay, but the void that I think [Torres] fills is he reminds us of that freshness,” he continues. “We almost like vets…you need that new young energy that doesn’t know much yet, but has somewhere to grow, you know? And that’s the dynamic that he brings to the table and we enjoy that.”
