CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION’s Aisha Tyler Previews What’s to Come for Lewis’ New Romance

With CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION showcasing the team’s life outside of work, the CRIMINAL MINDS revival is shedding new insight into Tara Lewis’ (Aisha Tyler) personal life.

In the second hour of the new Paramount+ series, Lewis mentions Rebecca Wilson, a “friend at the DOJ,” who might be able to help BAU with their lingering bureaucratic issues. Lewis brings Rebecca to meet with Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) and David Rossi (Joe Mantegna)—and Prentiss instantly realizes that the two are actually a couple.

“You and her, you’re such a thing,” Prentiss tells Lewis when the duo get a moment alone.

Lewis admits the two have been seeing each other for a few months. It’s not the first time she’s dated a woman, she says, but it is her “first time being this happy.”

Prior to CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION officially coming together, the cast met with showrunner Erica Messer for an overview of the season. Additionally, Tyler was told her character “was going to be in a relationship, and a bit more about the details of that relationship.”

When she found out about what was in store, “I was thrilled,” Tyler tells reporters in the video below. “I thought it was gonna be a really great story to tell, and a great story for my character, who, I think, lived a very intellectual life. And the last time she was in a relationship was season 11, when she joined the BAU, and that ended. And she very much since then has devoted herself to the work.”

Tyler acknowledges she and Tara are similar in that way—”I’m a driven person. I’m an ambitious person. I think, specifically, women are always apologizing for their ambition, and I do not apologize.”—and this new romance is a bit of a surprise for the agent.

“It’s one of those things that kind of snuck up on her, with someone that she really respects and admires,” Tyler says. “I do think what we’re going to see this season is how difficult it is for people in this very dark line of work, that requires an incredible amount of personal sacrifice, to also maintain a relationship.”

“I think people are going to really enjoy watching Tara go on this journey,” she continues. “She is devoted to her work. And it’s important work, and it requires devotion. [Now we’ll see] how she navigates the nexus between being in love and caring deeply [about her] work.”
