CHICAGO FIRE is closing out 2022 with Firehouse 51 taking on one of their biggest calls of the year.

“There’s a giant call right at the beginning of the episode that’s as big [and] as scary to film as anything we’ve done,” CHICAGO FIRE co-showrunner Derek Haas previews to Give Me My Remote. “Chicago is pretty famous for having bridges that rise up and stop traffic from going, and [in ‘Nemesis’] somebody crossed onto one of those bridges when they weren’t supposed to. [It’s] based on a real incident that we saw on the news where somebody was just stuck halfway up and dangling precariously.”

“Of course, our fearless crew goes in to save them,” he continues. “I mean, it made me nervous watching them film. But [during that,] one of our firefighters gets into a tussle with a city worker. And when that happens, because it’s the city worker, it can’t just be something handled internally as Firehouse 51. Instead, CFD gets activated and Internal Affairs gets activated.”

Unfortunately for Firehouse 51, they don’t exactly know the mess they have accidentally stumbled into. “When Internal Affairs gets activated, that means trouble for us, because an old face that we’ve forgotten about reappears at 51,” Haas teases.

But as they deal with the unforeseen, Gallo (Alberto Rosende) has his own side mission.

“Every firefighter wants to go on a trip in the dead of winter to get out of Chicago when it’s freezing there,” Haas shares. “And this year, there’s gonna be an amazing trip to Miami that Gallo decides, because of the trouble he’s gotten in with Herrmann’s niece, he wants Herrmann to win, so that he will finally be in a good mood.”

Gallo sets out to rally his coworkers to vote for Herrmann (David Eigenberg), but “of course, this is CHICAGO FIRE,” Haas says with a laugh. “And nothing goes according to plan.”

And that applies to the cliffhanger the show will leave fans on as there’s a mini-hiatus before its midseason return on Wednesday, January 4.

“That [Martucci] case is haunting Severide as we start the episode, and he decides to take aggressive action and take control over it,” co-showrunner Andrea Newman previews. “And it ends up putting the lives of several of our crew at risk.”
