On the Wednesday, December 7 fall finale of CHICAGO P.D., Intelligence is finally in a good place with their investigation into Sean (Jefferson White)…at least, that’s what they think.

“We finally have some actual physical evidence,” showrunner Gwen Sigan tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “But, unfortunately, we will see that that’s not enough. And there will be a lot of obstacles. We now know it’s Sean, Sean knows we’re coming after him. The chief knows we’re coming after him. So we are really in a pressure cooker in episode 9, and up against the clock needing to get evidence.”

“It is a squeeze for our whole team [with] how we’re going to deal with this,” she continues. “Especially when it’s the chief’s son and the chief is doing absolutely everything he can to make sure we can’t bring his son in.”

Chief O’Neal’s (Michael Gaston) reluctance to cooperate puts him in a collision course with Voight (Jason Beghe) in “Proof of Burden.”

“Voight can innately understand what it’s like to want to protect your child,” Sigan points out. “And we’ve seen him do that. We’ve seen him cross quite a lot of lines to protect Justin. But this, in what Sean is doing, is a darkness and something I think that Voight can’t fathom you wouldn’t look in the eye. Can’t fathom that wouldn’t break through that protection.”

“That’s really the part of this that we’ll see in episode 9,” she continues. “Voight trying to get to that base level, [saying], ‘This is not something that you can save him from. This is not something you can protect. And you know that. So what is it that is blocking this and how can I get you to see that?’ And so it’s a very sort of emotional, psychological thing between the two of them of just trying to break through those barriers and have him help [Intelligence].”

While Voight tries to work on the chief, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) finds herself once again circling Sean directly.

“She’s obsessed,” Sigan acknowledges. “She is just all in…she now believes they have the evidence they need, so she is woman on fire. She is so committed and obsessed to this thing. And when those obstacles start hitting, we’ll see that she can’t let this go. Not only is this criminal walking around, this man that also…thinks that they’re connected and he thinks they’re the same and that’s gotten in her head. But there’s also these girls out there. She knows that these girls are out there.”

“So we’ll see that stress and that strain and her needing to hang on to just the level of ‘do the job and not let it consume you’ [mindset],” she continues. “Because the second you let it consume you, you’re not going to be as good at the job, which is what is needed in this moment—police work and outsmarting these people.”

Of course, the fall finale isn’t the only big thing ahead for CHICAGO P.D.—the drama is set to celebrate its 200th episode in 2023.

“It’s insane,” Sigan previews of the milestone, with a laugh. “We are trying to do something very ambitious. It’s in the works now…we want to do something that gives credit to the fact that we’ve done this show for 10 years, and also to how many really talented people work on this show. And so we’re going to do a production feat…it will be a bit of an action movie, but also a very emotional Burgess storyline.”

“I’m excited for it,” she continues. “It’s going to be a fun, very challenging one, but I think we can do it…it’s really about Intelligence as it is now and how far these characters have come in the past 10 years.”
