It’s official: FBI’s Scola (John Boyd) and Nina (Shantel VanSanten) are having a baby!

The fall finale, “Fortunate Son,” kicked off with Nina telling Scola she had something “good” she wanted to talk about—but she’d chase him down later.

Scola, who was still reeling from the news of her pregnancy and her decision to leave the team was happy, was thrilled when Nina later shared she was going to have the baby. But things took a turn when she had another reveal for him.

“The thing is, I want to do it by myself,” Nina said.

Scola was flabbergasted, but Nina stood firm. “I just think it’s best if I raise the baby on my own,” she said. “You can be involved, of course, if that’s what you want…I just need to be able to have control of my life and the baby’s.”

Nina acknowledged that could take her out of town: there was a possible opening in the Intelligence unit in Los Angeles that she was interested in pursuing. She also told Scola that she spoke to a lawyer to draw up paperwork to make their situation official. Scola was horrified, thinking she wanted him to sign away his rights, but Nina insisted she didn’t want that—she just wanted them to be clear with each other.

Scola reluctantly agreed to look over the paperwork, but after thinking about it, he ultimately couldn’t sign it.

“This little boy or little girl is going to need me,” he told Nina. “They’re going to need to know their father loved them.”

Instead, he reiterated his commitment to their future child: He wouldn’t waive his rights, but he would work with Nina in whatever capacity she needed. “I will give you the flexibility that you need,” he told her. “But I need to be there. It’s non-negotiable for me.”

Nina agreed they could see how it goes, and dropped one more tidbit of news: they’re having a boy. She offered to go out to dinner with Scola so they could talk about possible baby names.

Earlier in the season, as Nina and Scola were first reuniting, Boyd acknowledged Scola might have some issues adjusting to a healthy, balanced personal life. “Something about him is that he’s always felt that that life—[with] a full, real, intimate loving relationship—is something that’s reserved for other people,” he shared at the time. “Like so many of us, it’s so relatable. And I think he’s one of those people that it’s like, ‘This is the job I chose. This is what I do. I do it well. I give everything to this. And that thing about human life is reserved for other people. I don’t really get to have it.’”

But with things going right, at least for now, hopefully the agent will start to have a little faith in that kind of life working out for himself, too.
