THE VOICE’s Bryce Leatherwood on His History-Making Win and Dueting with Blake Shelton
December 20, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
THE VOICE’s Bryce Leatherwood won season 22, but his journey on the show wasn’t always smooth. In fact, the country singer became the first winner of the series to have been placed in the Instant Save vote, be saved by America, and eventually go on to become the champ.
“What it can do, more than what it means to me, is [how] it can impact other people [competing on the show in the future] by saying, ‘Hey, even when you think when you’re down and out, you’ve always got an opportunity to fight back and succeed,'” Leatherwood tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Never give up on yourself. Never lose faith in yourself and confidence in yourself. You just gotta keep pushing through.”
The finale also featured a full-circle moment for Leatherwood, who auditioned doing a cover of Blake Shelton’s version of Conway Twitty’s “Goodbye Time.” And before he was declared the champ, Shelton and Leatherwood did a duet of another one of Shelton’s songs.
“It was a blast,” he says. “I told Blake, number one, I wanna sing one of your songs. Number two, I want it to be fun…I could have done ‘Austin’ with him, which is my favorite Blake Shelton song. But I want to do something that really was a celebration song…so how about ‘Hillbilly Bone’? Make it all red necked up…make it a hillbilly song, and then make it fun. Because that’s who I am; I know who I am…we had a great time.”
Plus, watch the video below to find out which song Leatherwood thought was his defining moment on the show…
