NEW AMSTERDAM: Tyler Labine on Iggy and Martin’s Latest Breakup
January 2, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
After a lot of back and forth, NEW AMSTERDAM’s Iggy (Tyler Labine) and Martin (Mike Doyle) seemingly split for good in the final episode that aired in 2022.
“First of all…shooting the scene with Mike Doyle where he suggests that we were past repair was really heartbreaking to shoot,” Labine tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Mike and I were like, ‘Oh, we’re really breaking up…the show’s ending, me and Mike aren’t gonna have these scenes together anymore.’ It was really heartbreaking. There was a lot of real emotion in that scene.”
With this latest split, “when I stepped back and look at Iggy and Martin, I’m heartbroken,” Labine admits. “I wish the show didn’t have to go in that direction. I wish Iggy did many things differently. But I’m not the writer, obviously. So I have to kind of just sit back and do what I’m told, but in my heart…I also still hope that we have enough time to get them back together.”
The duo won’t be the only one contending with relationship drama when the medical show returns on Tuesday, January 3, for the series’ antepenultimate episode. With Helen (Freema Agyeman) back in New York, Max (Ryan Eggold) has to figure out the best way to handle a possible reunion.
“There are some moments of support, for sure; I mean, they’re tight, they’re close friends,” Labine says of Iggy and Max. “Iggy’s been there for Max and vice versa. But he kind of gave his advice to Max earlier in the season: that he may have selective memory when it comes to how much happiness Helen brought him. Not saying that she didn’t bring him happiness; she did. But there were signs all along the way [they weren’t on the same page].”
“I think the more important thing now is that everyone is really there to support Max and his happiness journey, not how to navigate some of the wreckage that has been left in the past with his relationship,” he continues. “That’s really between them, you know? So we’ll see how they hash it out.”
Plus, watch more from Labine, as he discusses how the writers used an element of his real-life during Iggy’s quest to see what would bring him joy…
