NEW AMSTERDAM Recap: ‘Falling’

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Tuesday, January 3 episode of NEW AMSTERDAM, “Falling.”]

Helen (Freema Agyeman) was back in town on the Tuesday, January 3 episode of NEW AMSTERDAM, “Falling,” and Max (Ryan Eggold) really didn’t know what the heck to do about it.

At first, he tried to explain himself to Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank), who had finally agreed to take a step forward in their relationship, but pulled back when she saw his reaction to seeing Helen on TV.

“It was like seeing a ghost,” he signed to her. “And I was in shock. Disbelief. Because she isn’t in my life anymore. But you are.”

Wilder was understanding, but still wanted no part of it. “I know how much Helen meant to you,” she signed. “And we both have pasts…But I won’t be a part of someone else’s romantic drama.”

After Helen reached out via text and asked if they could meet at a bar, and Max decided he needed to get away from temptation, comparing the relationship to his daughter’s new peanut allergy and his move to remove all the nuts from his home.

He dragged a number of his colleagues to a (disastrous) nature retreat…but eventually confessed to Wilder that Helen had texted him and he was not going to see her. Wilder pushed back: “You need to go. You need to look at her and then decide what you really want. You can’t run forever.”

Ultimately, Max got back in time, and watched Helen from afar. He left without talking to his ex and went to Wilder instead.

“You told me to make a choice,” Max signed to Wilder before he kissed her.
