NEW AMSTERDAM Series Finale Exclusive Clip: Max Recalls the Moment He Wanted to Become a Doctor

After five seasons, NEW AMSTERDAM comes to an end with a two-episode series closer on Tuesday, January 17.

But as the show approaches the end, the medical drama is actually looking to its characters’ pasts. “It’s an origin story,” executive producer David Schulner previously shared with Give Me My Remote. “It’s about the origin of everyone’s moment of inspiration of when they wanted to be a doctor. So it’s about everyone’s past. It’s obviously about the present day, being with the characters we know and love, and then there’s also a little bit of the future in there.”

And in an exclusive clip from the second hour (called, appropriately, “How Can I Help?”), Max (Ryan Eggold) recalls when he first knew he’d be a doctor—complete with a flashback of young Max (Blake Kane).

“I share this with you now, not just so you can imagine me as an adorable little five-year-old,” he tells his colleagues in the video below. “But because I want you to remember what that moment was for you—when you knew this was going to be your calling. Because this job can wear you down; even on the best days, it takes a toll on your heart.”

Max encourages his friends and colleagues to remember why they do this—and “let that moment be your North Star.”
