GHOSTS: Sheila Carrasco and Devan Chandler Long Preview Flower and Thor’s First Date
February 16, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
It’s a very special Valentine’s Day on GHOSTS: Flower (Sheila Carrasco) and Thor (Devan Chandler Long) are going on their first date on the Thursday, February 16 episode.
“There’s a lot of nerves here,” Long tells Give Me My Remote. “This has been a slow burn for a year-and-a-half [on-screen]. When you get a big moment coming up, you’re gonna be nervous as heck, but Thor has been pining for this and Flower has been kinda dancing around it. And now she’s finally like, ‘Hey, to heck with it. I’m in.’ Everyone’s had a first date. That’s what it is. It’s a first date. It might be a little awkward, but I think it might turn out pretty good in the end.”
“A little awkward, definitely, because they’ve already made out before the first date,” Carrasco adds. “But for Flower—and maybe Thorfinn, too—that doesn’t mean much. So they’re actually giving the romantic part of their relationship a shot. I think Flower’s gonna be very impressed, without teasing too much, [with] just the thought that Thorfinn puts into the date. He really takes a lot of effort and energy into creating the perfect night, which is really fun.”
Of course, on paper, Thor (a Viking) and Flower (a hippie) might not be the most conventional couple. Do their views on romance—and an ideal date—actually sync up?
“For Flower, romance could look like a lot of different things,” Carrasco says. “I think she’s always really open. But I think that ultimately what she’s really afraid of is getting too close. So that really builds some walls and doesn’t make it easy for people to have lasting romantic relationships with her. So we’re going to find out exactly what those intimacy issues are and why. And I hope that people will connect and relate to it, because I think it’s a pretty deep reveal.”
And Thor is inexperienced in this area for a whole other reason. “He’s never been on a date before,” Long points out. “Most of his romance [experience] is touch and go. He’s kind of a hummingbird, he just smells flowers—no pun intended. He was married, but I guess it was an arranged marriage. So it wasn’t this whole courtship or anything like that. So this whole dating thing is really wild to him. And all he knows about dating is what he’s learned from reality TV shows and television. So he’s in the thick of it. We’ll see how he handles it.”
“Going on a formal date is definitely a fish out of water experience for Flower, as well,” Carrasco adds. “Even just the sight of the two of them sitting down to a four-course meal, at a beautifully laid out table, is funny in itself, because they’re both like, ‘What’s happening? But I’m going to pretend like I know exactly what’s happening. Okay, here we go.'”
For better or worse, the newfound couple has an interesting complication to contend with: Even if things go south, they simply can’t escape each other on the house’s grounds since they’re confined to spend their afterlife there.
“I don’t think Thor has the foresight to understand beyond tomorrow,” Long admits. “I don’t think he’s really thinking too far ahead. He’s a pretty confident dude, so he thinks it’s gonna work out, always. Pretty sure he’s going ‘burn the ships’ mentality, where it’s like, ‘This is gonna succeed or I’ll die while doing it.’ He’s already dead, so he’s all in. All the chips are on the table.”
“It’s funny you say that—those stakes never really occurred to me when doing this episode,” Carrasco adds. “It was more about [Flower thinking], ‘What if I get too close? What would happen if I really fall in deep?’ Because I do think, at least from my perspective approaching Flower, I’ve never once doubted that they would be amazing together. You can feel the chemistry. It feels electric. And I think that that’s what scares Flower. I don’t think she even considers what if it doesn’t go well, either.”
No matter what happens on the date, the actors are just happy to get to focus on the couple for a bit. “It’s gonna be nice to really devote an episode to what this is and what it could be,” Long says.
Oh, and as a warning: “The dinner menu is going to be really exotic,” Long teases.
