The AMERICAN AUTO Cast Teases Accidental Trouble in ‘Young Designers’

Payne Motors celebrates a Young Designers contest at a local elementary school on the Tuesday, March 7 episode of AMERICAN AUTO—and things immediately start to go awry.

In addition to Katherine (Ana Gasteyer) accidentally upsetting multiple Payne-affiliated countries, Jack (Tye White) runs into a former teacher, who is delighted to see her ex-pupil doing so well—at first.

“I do see an old teacher of mine,” White tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “And she was very proud and excited to see how successful I’ve become, but then it kind of gets spilled out through happenstance that I didn’t go to college, that I didn’t get the job the traditional way. So everything that I had built up in that episode kind of crumbles around me before her.”

It’s not only the faculty causing drama—Cyrus (Michael Benjamin Washington) is horrified to discover a kid designed a car that’s almost identical to one he’s been working on for five years.

“Cyrus gets to reenact or re-initiate [his problem] when someone else is doing good, which I love about this guy,” Washington previews. “Everybody here is flawed. They’re not perfect. They lean towards amorality, as Tye so eloquently said in an interview earlier today that I love, because Cyrus leans the hardest. And I think what happens is Cyrus wants to make his place in this company…and anytime he sees someone else maybe getting there sooner than it’s taken him, he gets very agitated and I understand that. So he sees a kid, who might have already achieved what it took him three business degrees to get to—it’ll piss a brother off.”

Thankfully, the filming experience was considerably lighter. “It’s a fun episode,” White says. “It was fun shooting with a whole bunch of kids; those kids are so talented. Even though we put one of them to sleep, it was the funniest thing—they were just knocked out in the middle of that scene. But it was so much fun.”
