Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

AMERICAN IDOL: The subcategories for mentoring didn’t really work for me. It was a good idea, in theory—minus song-writing, which is important, but isn’t really the most important thing right now?—but it also really took away from the larger performance element. After watching the first days of Hollywood week, I basically remember 1) the SMASH song (which was immediately obvious it was too Broadway for the show), 2) the judges and other contestants singing Wé Ani’s song after her performance, and 3) Sarah Beth quit. (And I don’t get why she did. I understand she missed her family, but to come that far and not stay another day or so to see how far she could go? Kind of bizarre.)

Alas.

MAGNUM P.I.: I really wish they structured the episode differently, because it felt like they were trying to give almost equal importance to all three storylines, and therefore all suffered. (Not to mention it would have been nice if Magnum, Rick, and TC were together for the Greene storyline.)

With only a few episodes left in the season, I’m curious how much they’ll balance who is trying to find the guys versus one-off cases of the week…
