About Last Night…THE EQUALIZER, MAGNUM P.I., FAMILY GUY, and More

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!
AMERICAN IDOL: Nailyah taking on “Lovin’ You” is gutsy as hell, and it paid off. Hitting those notes? Yowza.
Iam’s performance was also great—and it’s incredible he became the first finalist to perform in Hawaii and actually be local. It doesn’t directly impact the voting, of course, but it made for an incredible performance and TV experience.
BOB’S BURGERS: Okay, telling everyone in the family to spend exactly under $20 was always going to be a nightmare to enforce, but I really thought Louise would be the one thinking she could convince everyone to gift the entire thing to something she wanted, not Linda. (I know it’s not logically true, but a $100 gift card—to a place you like/you’ll use it—does seem more fun than cash. Even if both have the same value, one is fun.)
THE EQUALIZER: Glad the show hammered home how insane our country’s treatment of asylum seekers remains. And the ridiculousness of humans being used as props—taken in buses to places without their consent—as a way to score political points.
Glad Aunt Vi was able to help her student—and that Dante was able to assist. (Even if I’m incredibly jealous of the cupcakes she made him. Holy…those looked great.) I love when McCall’s worlds get a little more intermingled.
THE GREAT NORTH: “Phantom Plant Man” flamed out fast, but also now I want to see that hybrid show? (It would be a mess. I do not care.)
Also, I loved the pizza costumes, and I’m delightfully shocked that Beef enjoyed it. “It’s like a hoodie with cheese” made me laugh out loud.
MAGNUM P.I.: Poor, sweet Childs—as soon as he started planning for the future with his girlfriend (on the phone!), he was doomed by TV rules.
And TC! Protect that man!!!!
I’m curious how fans react to the Magnum/Higgins proposal promo bait. As soon as the episode starts, it feels very clear it’s a dream sequence, but the promos that ran for two weeks certainly made it seem like it would be real. (Even if it didn’t make a whole lot of sense they’d be quite there now.)
Yes, the main case was…a lot. And they violated a lot of privacy laws with Higgins going undergoing and posing as a doctor/interacting with patients—they’d probably be sued into oblivion. If there hadn’t been so much insanity with Childs and TC, it would be really easy to be WTF about it, but…there was a lot going on.
[For more on the episode, here’s what star Stephen Hill shared.]
FAMILY GUY: Okay, how fast did the team have to work to get that Quibi-Reese Witherspoon-Jim Toth joke in?
If those books by FAMILY GUY writers were real, I’m also desperately curious about how much this episode impacts book sales in the coming weeks. It’s hard to think of a better promo.
