On Friday, May 12th, Deidre Hall celebrates her 5,000th episode of DAYS OF OUR LIVES, now streaming exclusively on Peacock.

Joining the cast in 1976 as Dr. Marlena Evans, Hall has been through everything you’d expect from a daytime drama. She’s been married to five different men, come back to life six times after being presumed dead, kept in a gilded cage in Paris, and, of course, been possessed by the devil—twice. She’s the warm-hearted therapist the entire town goes to for advice, half of one of the most dynamic, supportive, and loving supercouples in soap opera history, and the current matriarch of Salem, which is a title she more than deserves after four decades.

With Marlena always lending her ear to whoever needs it, Give Me My Remote asked what advice Hall has given her co-workers, whether it be about acting, how to make it through life, or even just a look that says everything.

ALISON SWEENEY (Sami Brady): Honestly the best advice maybe I’ve ever gotten for my career came from Deidre. When I first started working on the show, she helped me understand how important every element of the production is. She basically said, “No matter how well you act in the scene, if the camera can’t see you or the boom can’t hear you, we’ll have to do it again. So you can’t get caught up so deep in your performance that you forget to pay attention to everything else.” Very wise advice.

ERIC MARTSOLF (Brady Black): She has a wonderful way of telling you not to sweat the small stuff. If you get frustrated in any capacity, she has this wonderful way of looking at you, and just going “Honey, sweetie, don’t worry about it, whatever you think is this mountain of complication, it’s not.”…And she’s very good at picking the ones that are worth fighting and letting the ones that aren’t go. And I think that’s a good way to live. That’s a good lesson just in life.

MARTHA MADISON (Belle Black): Well, I can’t share the best advice because it wouldn’t be appropriate, but I would say her best advice was to always be appropriate. Don’t overshare.

ROBERT SCOTT WILSON (Ben Weston/Alex Kiriakis): I think [the best piece of advice is something] she probably did without putting it into words. Which is to care for the work. It’s through her actions and how we operate when it comes to the work. It showed me, don’t get too comfortable. Work hard. It’s necessary. Deidre’s got a work ethic and it’s always inspired me. She taught me that without even probably trying to.

GREG VAUGHAN (Eric Brady): I think just follow your heart, be who you are. [Deidre] doesn’t have to say much. When she looks at you, [it conveys] “I love you, I got you,” and you just know it. I think her actions speak louder than words because off-camera she’s always present and thinking about me and my family, [my twin’s] well-being, and it means a lot to me. It means a lot that [she’s] saying, “I’m not just thinking about work, I’m thinking about you personally.” I think her heart goes beyond the size of who she is, [this] iconic figure. She’s just that big-hearted person.

CHANDLER MASSEY (Will Horton): She just leads by example. She gave me plenty of advice, but off the top of my head, just watching her work, how dedicated she was to rehearsing behind the scenes. The work day for her started as soon as she got in. A lot of us like to socialize in the makeup room, but she was all about the work. As soon as we got into the studio, [we were] working on it, running it, finding beats, kind of exploring what would make the scene different or fun. Her work ethic inspired me. I take the job and each scene more seriously.
