With QUANTUM LEAP’s central timeline jumping forward three years in season 2—though Ben (Raymond Lee) was unaware of how much time passed—there’s still much we don’t know about how our team spent that off-screen time.

However, the most recent episode teased that Magic (Ernie Hudson) had someone special in his life…but didn’t reveal who was on the other side of his phone call.

“It’s a character that you’ve met,” co-showrunner Martin Gero teases to Give Me My Remote.

“It’s a character who will help give us insight to what Magic went through,” co-showrunner Dean Georgaris adds. “I think people might forget—because Magic is such a polished and eloquent character—[that] Magic lost [the original series character] Sam. And then what just happened for three years was Magic lost Ben.”

“Now, Sam wasn’t necessarily directly Magic’s responsibility, obviously, but he’s someone that Magic came to care for,” Georgaris continues. (Sam’s leaper inhabited Magic back in a 1990 episode of the original series.) “Ben was directly Magic’s responsibility. And I think what’s great about Magic having someone in his life is we start to understand that as strong a man as he is, he hurts, too.”

The Wednesday, October 25 episode of QUANTUM LEAP marks an unexpected milestone for the drama’s sophomore season: the halfway point of the filmed episodes. Though it is one of the few shows airing originals this fall, only eight episodes were completed before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA labor disputes with the AMPTP shut down production earlier this year. (The WGA strike concluded last month; SAG-AFTRA is currently negotiating with the studios as of press time.)

Despite that, the showrunners say the filmed episodes will take the show up to its planned winter break. “The second the actors are good to work, we’ll be back to making episodes and hope to give you an uninterrupted batch of episodes as soon as possible, as early as you would expect them to come in a regular broadcast,” Gero says. “The show is in a singular position, honestly, because we got our pick up so early—we were able to make these eight episodes before the strike. And I think we’ll have the time now, on the other side of the strike, if God willing the studios come to their senses and make a deal with the actors, then we can air a regular season of television, which I think no other show can say or do.”
