TRANSPLANT Post-Mortem: Joseph Kay on Showcasing Bash’s Joy

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Thursday, October 26 episode of TRANSPLANT.]

After finding out Dr. Singh (Sugith Varughese) wants him to train as a trauma surgeon, Bash (Hamza Haq) checks in with his new boss, Dr. Devi (Rekha Sharma), on the Thursday, October 26 episode of TRANSPLANT to see what she thinks of the proposal.

“As long as you’re willing to start from the bottom,” she says. “Again.” 

Of course, she wasn’t going to give in without a bit of pushback, noting she thought he should “focus on other skills,” but did acknowledge, “If you want this, it’s up to you.”

Cut to Bash screaming “Yes!” in joy, loudly, outside of the hospital.

“We wanted the moment of emotion, definitely,” TRANSPLANT creator Joseph Kay tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “To see him express joy, loud. He can be a muted character, and so we loved the idea of him saying that.” 

The writers also have been showcasing a different side of Bash via the flashbacks they’ve highlighted. “In season 1 and 2…we have flashback sequences that go throughout the season that explore different parts of his past, and those were both about the war,” he says. “And in season 3, we explore his youth before the war. We explore a time in Bash’s life when he was young and optimistic, full of hope, and took for granted the fact that he was going to be a surgeon just because his parents were surgeons. And so we wanted him to get in touch with that joy.”

As a bonus, the end of episode 3 meant “Hamza yelled pretty loudly on the Montreal streets,” Kay jokes.
