12 TV Hopes for 2024
December 22, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
2023 is almost over, but…boy, was it an unforgettable year for the entertainment industry and the television world.
But with 2024 around the corner, let’s look at a few hopes for the 12 months ahead of us…
- The industry was shut down for much of 2023 as writers and actors were forced to go on strike to fight for a fair contract. But there are other entertainment industry labor negotiations coming up in 2024, including IATSE—AKA the crew (and more, including writers’ assistants) that helps film the shows and movies we love—so let’s cross our fingers the studios learned any kind of lesson from this past year and we don’t get Hot Strike Summer 2.0. (And if IATSE going on strike is what’s needed for them to get a fair contract, I hope fans are as supportive as they were toward the writers and actors.)
- For most network shows, this will be a very short season—perhaps the shortest the shows have ever done. While production is well underway for virtually all of them, here’s hoping the unusual circumstances of the season leads to something wonderfully weird, when appropriate. Shake up the format. Do bottle episodes. (Which, yes, if they are the true definition of the term are generally cheaper to make and can be easier on the entire production process because you do not have to build/move locations.)
- Speaking of the unusual network season, we’ve already seen an abundance of announcements for final seasons and a couple of early renewals. Fingers crossed we see similar decisions made for the rest of the shows sooner versus later because having to craft a finale that serves as both a season closer and a series closer is not easy. (And having to rush to make it one or the other close to production isn’t easy, either.)
- For the love of all that is holy and unholy, studios, stop pulling original shows from streaming platforms. And if you’re going to continue to do this, make it so every single show is made available to purchase in a physical set. The creatives and fans deserve better than shows just vanishing.
- I am once again begging for an animated episode of ABBOTT ELEMENTARY—since the series was originally pitched in that format—please and thank you.
- With FBI: INTERNATIONAL, CHICAGO FIRE, and CHICAGO P.D. all losing characters early in the season…is it too much to ask that they all get happy endings? Please? (Would that be a miracle, TV-wise? Probably. But at the very least you have the groundwork for happy endings for P.D.’s Upstead and FIRE’s Brettsey, so…make it happen, please?)
- Relatedly: It’s been a rough year for everyone. It’s TV, and there’s going to be some drama. But can we have a little bit of happiness for couples who have been through a lot in the past few years? (Yes, I’m talking about FIRE’s Stellaride, P.D.’s Burzek, and THE ROOKIE’s Chenford.)
- I know this is probably the literal bare minimum at this point, but as LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Olivia and L&O: ORGANIZED CRIME’s Elliot enter season 25 (!!!) of their, um, complicated relationship, I am begging the universe (okay, the TV writers) to A) let them actually interact more this season and B) continue their friendship off-screen even when they can’t be actively in each other’s lives. Again…the literal bare minimum here.
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE is the little show that could, returning every single time it seems like it’s reached the end of the road. This go-round, they’re seemingly shaking everything up, moving out of the studio norm, and having a competition based more in, well, reality for dancers. While it’ll be good to see the show again, fingers crossed they can keep the heart and soul of the series in this new format.(Update: If you’re wondering why this has been crossed out, please read about the ongoing lawsuit against the show’s co-creator.)- While it’s probably fair to guess who got, um, sucked off in the GHOSTS finale—at least temporarily—because of real-life events, please let the pretty perfect ensemble still work until the MIA character returns to the show. So much of what makes this show work is the entire group’s dynamic, so it’s a tiny bit scary to know we’re (likely) going to be without one ghost for the time being.
- This may be cheating, but I don’t care: Can we please get a soundtrack for THE KELLY CLARKSON SHOW? I know we got the “Kellyoke” EP, but she’s knocking these covers out of the park every day. Can we have more to own, please?!
- Do you know what was a charming, underrated show? SHRINKING. Please go watch that so Apple TV+ can make 75 more episodes. Ditto NBC’s THE IRRATIONAL, which has been one of my favorite non-franchise new procedural series in years…watch that so we can get more than the already-ordered season 2.
What do you hope to see in 2024?

RE: Ghosts: interesting. i never actually considered a temporary suck-off. i dont think they can do it permanently b/c of maternity laws (and it’d be a shitty thing to do, but the EPs seem like decent guys). i still think it’ll be a fake-out and be a basement ghost or someone we only see sometimes (stephanie, crash, etc). They can explain Flower’s absence by saying she was banished to the woods for X amount of months for doing something. like how they almost did that to Hetty
