SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Nigel Lythgoe Exits Following Sexual Assault Allegations
January 5, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
Nigel Lythgoe has stepped down from the upcoming season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
“I have informed the producers of So You Think You Can Dance of my decision to step back from participating in this year’s series,” Lythgoe said in a statement to Deadline. “I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that’s where its focus needs to remain. In the meantime, I am dedicating myself to clearing my name and restoring my reputation.”
Lythgoe has been accused of multiple instances of sexual assault, with two lawsuits being filed against him. (One, from Paula Abdul, alleged an assault during Lythgoe’s tenure on SYTYCD.)
In a statement from 19 Entertainment, Dick Clark Productions, and FOX, they confirmed the show would continue on without the judge. “19 Entertainment, Dick Clark Productions, and FOX can confirm the upcoming season of So You Think You Can Dance will proceed, although without Nigel Lythgoe, to ensure the show remains committed to the contestants, who have worked incredibly hard for the opportunity to compete on our stage. No decision has been made as to a replacement judge for this season, which will premiere on FOX on Monday, March 4th.”
Reps didn’t respond to whether Lythgoe (who co-created the show) will remain an executive producer on the series or how the show will handle the already-filmed episodes at press time.
Lythgoe was set to judge season 18 with SYTYCD vet Allison Holker and DANCING WITH THE STARS alum Maksim Chmerkovskiy. (SYTYCD’s Comfort Fedoke guest judged for the auditions round.) Cat Deeley is set to return as host.
