QUANTUM LEAP Post-Mortem: Caitlin Bassett on Addison’s Big Decisions in ‘Off the Cuff’

Wedding bells may be ringing on QUANTUM LEAP: Addison (Caitlin Bassett) and Tom (Peter Gadiot) are engaged!
“She’s finally starting to make proactive decisions about who she’s going to be in all of this,” Bassett tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. In the past, she explains, Addison had to be reactionary to the big shifts in her world. “Now all of a sudden, she’s making those decisions.”
And opting to move on, fully, with Tom isn’t the only big choice she made: With the news that the team may have a possible way to bring Ben (Raymond Lee) home—but no clue if the lead will go anywhere or how long it will take—Addison also suggested they leave her former fiance in the dark about the possible good news.
Having so much agency has been “so fun to play,” Bassett says. “For the first time, I’m dealing with repercussions of my own decisions instead of dealing with repercussions of other people’s. And you get to find out who Addison is. Making mistakes, not mistakes, owning it. I always tend to trust people who just own the decision they’re making. And sometimes it just feels good to make one. Just make one. And then if it’s wrong, it’s wrong, but at least the progress is progress. Stop just being stuck! And Addison gets herself unstuck in the second half of the season and it’s very fun.”
Admittedly, the episode wasn’t as great for Ben. He reunited with Hannah (Eliza Taylor) on a leap, only to discover she had moved on, too…and the episode ended with him learning her husband was set to die shortly from a treatable condition. Unfortunately, he was swept to the next time period before he could warn her.
“I was a little concerned that…Ben had such a rough episode, and then Addison was like, ‘I’m gonna get engaged,’” Bassett acknowledges. “I was like, ‘Guys, they might hate me.’ But I think what it really is [is just reiterating] they’re not in the same life anymore. And Addison really sees it. I think her making a decision for herself is also, a little bit, for Ben because she’s like, ‘You’re in an awful place. I need to be there for you in a different way, as a friend. I have to learn how to do this for you. And grounding myself in my life is a way to help that.’ So in a weird way, it all kind of works together.”
But don’t get too comfortable. “But don’t worry,” Bassett teases. “It gets worse.”
