The GHOSTS Showrunners on Keeping the Season 2 Cliffhanger Mystery Alive
February 15, 2024 by Marisa Roffman
When GHOSTS ended its sophomore season, it ended with one heck of a cliffhanger: One ghost was, well, sucked off. (For those not well-versed in the show’s mythology, that means moving on from their current undead limbo.)
But which ghost is gone when the show returns? The showrunners have been very, very, very careful to keep that secret over the past nine months—with the series delayed due to the two strikes—leading up to the Thursday, February 15 season premiere.
“We definitely took pains to not give away the answer to who got sucked off,” co-showrunner Joe Port tells Give Me My Remote. “We did send a couple of texts at different times to the cast, asking them not to post stuff that would be spoilers. I don’t know how well that even worked out. But I think for the most part, people don’t know what’s a red-herring or what’s a mislead or what’s a real post.”
“In the end, I don’t think it matters what anyone posted,” he continues. “There is a fine line of not wanting to give away information and also wanting to keep the fans engaged and have people excited about the show as it’s starting to shoot again, and all of that stuff. We basically tried to not overtly spoil it and hope that people didn’t figure it out before the premiere.”
With the long hiatus between seasons, Port and co-showrunner Joe Wiseman have been checking out what fans have theorized about what happens next. “We look at a lot of forums and stuff like that—it seems like people are all over the map with their guesses,” Port says. “Some are right on the money and some are going down a lot of other rabbit holes. It’s great there’s enthusiasm and there’s interest.”
“It is fun going on the forums, because even when someone presents the right answer and has very solid reasoning for it, people will be like, ‘No, I think it’s [someone else],’” Wiseman adds. “It’s fun that people have their theories and they’re passionate about it. I love it.”
